On Saturday October 7, 2006, International Association of Firefighters Local 1889 held their second annual Health Fair at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ on Telegraph Road. The beautiful fall day saw vendors from several local and regional health care providers and emergency services departments offer tips to those who attended the event.
Off-duty paramedics and firefighters from IAFF Local 1889 offered blood pressure checks, blood-sugar checks and fire safety tips. Twenty-five children were fitted for bicycle helmets by St. Louis Children’s Hospital and were able to purchase these helmets for a nominal fee. Anyone who was fitted for a helmet, purchased a helmet or had their blood sugar checked was entered into a drawing for one of three bicycles donated to the event.
Children young and old also got to climb on two vintage fire trucks displayed by the Gateway Fire Historical Society as well as a brand new fire truck displayed by Schuhmacher Fire Equipment and Pierce Manufacturing.
The event was a great success for those attending as well as the vendors involved. Plans are underway for next year’s event, so keep posted for details!
